Ready to find out which island suits your travel style best?
To Immerse Yourself in Nature, Visit Madeira
Madeira is wild in all the best ways. This lush Portuguese island floats in the Atlanta, where dramatic cliffs, laurel forests and hidden waterfalls set the scene for unforgettable hikes.
Here you can explore the islands famous “levadas” — narrow irrigation channels that double as hiking trails — and wake up for sunrise above the clouds at Pico do Areeiro. In between treks, dip into volcanic rock pools. Go whale and dolphin spotting off the coast. Or sample the island’s namesake wine. This is where you come to find your center and feel completely refreshed.
Where to Stay:Reid’s Palace, a Belmond Hotel, is a pastel-pink icon perched on a clifftop blending old world glamour with sweeping ocean views and lush tropical gardens. Pro Trip: Don’t miss their unforgettable afternoon tea.

To Chase Adventure, Visit Sardinia
Got an appetite for adventure and adrenaline? Sardinia may be the summer island for you. Off Italy’s west coast, this island has windsurfing in Porto Pollo, underwater caves near Tavolara, and the epic Selvaggio Blu trek for serious hikers.
Inland, you’ll discover mountain villages, Bronze Age ruins and vineyards pouring Sardinia’s rich red Cannonau wine. Or head north to Costa Smeralda. This is where yacht clubs, chic boutiques and glam beach clubs add a dash of that famous Riviera glitz.
That said, Sardinia (and its neighboring island Corsica) is a place where spontaneity is rewarded. Plan a few exciting excursions and leave the rest to fate.
Where to Stay: With its crisp whitewashed walls and handcrafted Sardinian design, R0mazzino brings breezy elegance to Costa Smeralda. Nestled along one of the area’s most picturesque beaches, this hotel offers those quintessential turquoise views yet with a laid-back and refined atmosphere.

To Make Family Memories, Visit Mallorca
A Spanish vacation is always a good idea. But if you’re traveling as a family, island life often beats out the buzz of city destinations like Barcelona.
Mallorca makes traveling with kids both easy and luxurious. Its beaches have calm, shallow waters that are perfect for little swimmers. Plus, there are water parks, gentle mountain hikes, boat trips to hidden coves, and charming towns with cobbled streets and local markets. It’s also compact enough that getting around doesn’t feel like a schlep. More good news: the island has a very family-friendly culture, which means little ones and families are welcomed most everywhere.
Where to Stay: Tucked into the northern tip of the island, The Four Seasons Resort Mallorca at Formentor is surrounded by fragrant pine groves and set along a pristine beach with crystal-clear water. It’s a peaceful, polished retreat that makes a great base for family beach days, nature walks, and relaxed Mediterranean dining with sea views.

To Dance the Night Away, visit Hvar
By day, Hvar is like many other European islands —all sun-bleached stone and turquoise water. But by night, it transforms into one of Croatia‘s best party scenes.
Start with sightseeing in Hvar Town’s cobbled streets, then sail to the nearby Pakleni Islands for beach clubs and swimming. If you want to experience Croatian island life in a quieter way, head to the lavender fields or a hidden bay near Maslinica with a bottle of Plavac Mali.
Where to Stay: Tucked away near the historic town of Stari Grad, the Masalina Resort is a serene retreat to recalibrate after embracing Hvar’s nightlife. The design is sleek and earthy, with a focus on wellness, organic dining, and panoramic views of the Adriatic. Here, you’ll start the day with a spa treatment, spend the afternoon wine tasting, and wind down with a sunset dip in your private plunge pool.

To Embrace Beach Life, Visit Milos
Milos is made for slow days and salty swims. With over 70 beaches (many of them only reachable by boat), it’s a Greek island built for coast-loving travelers. You’ll get plenty of sun and sand here. The hard part is deciding how to best spend your time. Will you cruise to surreal spots like Kleftiko’s white cliffs? Or swim through sea caves at Sykia? On land, you could explore ancient ruins and colorful fishing villages. And you’ll find tavernas serving octopus and tomato fritters right by the sea. It’s all at your fingertips in Milos!
Where to Stay:Domes White Coast Milos sits high above the sea, so the views are a knockout. Think cliffs, crashing waves and sunsets that light up the whole sky. The suites are just as nice, with that classic Greek whitewashed minimalism (plus each comes with its own plunge pool so you can float and relax in peace). It’s adults-only, so its extra quiet. Domes is perfect if you want a peaceful home base between sailing trips and beach days. You’re close enough to the action yet tucked away enough to feel like you hae the island to yourself.

Bonus Picks: 5 Off-The-Radar Islands
If you’re in the mood to slow down and skip the crowds, these lesser-known islands are worth a look. Each of these places offers an escape to the sea, food as fresh as it gets, and unreal landscapes. And each has its own pace and personality.
Pantelleria, Italy: Just 32 square miles of lava rock and while beauty, this remote island between Sicily and Tunisia trades beaches for thermal springs, traditional dammusi homes with white-domed roofs and volcanic serenity. Pantelleria is reachable by ferry or a short flight from Palermo or Trapani.
Where to Stay:Sikelia is a striking, grown-up hideaway set in ancient dammuso dwellings with a deep connection to the island’s rugged landscape.
Muhu Island, Estonia: Life on this scenic Baltic isle moves at its own gentle rhythm. Villagers still bake dense black rye leib bread in wood-fired ovens, wear colorful folk costumes and adorn their cottages with ancient mystical symbols. Muhu Island is accessible by ferry from Saaremaa or a short flight from Talin.
Where to Stay:Padaste Manor is a 16th-century estate turned boutique hotel with a Nordic spa and serious farm-to-table focus.
Losinj, Croatia: Known as the “Island of Vitality,” this lesser-known Croatian gem boasts over 200 days of sunshine annually. It has drawn health seekers since the 19th century thanks to its famously pure air, healing pine forests and calm Adriatic waters.
Where to Stay: The Boutique Hotel Alhambra is a restored villa on pine-fringed Cikat Bay featuring sea-view balconies, Michelin-star dining and a standout saltwater spa.
Folegandros, Greece: This tiny, cliff-hugging island in the Cyclades is all about simplicity. Whitewashed villages, winding mile paths and cliffside views that seem to stretch forever are found here. Life slows in postcard-perfect Chora, perched high above the Aegean, where long lunches and golden-hour hikes to the Panagia church are daily rituals. Accessible by ferry from Santorini, Milos or Piraeus.
Where to Stay:Gundari is a design-forward hideaway with private plunge pools, a sleek spa and standout Greek cuisine by Michelin-star chef Lefteris Lazarou.
Gozo, Malta: Sleepier and greener than Malta’s main island, Gozo keeps things slow. Hike past craggy cliffs and salt pans, swim in the clear waters of Ramla Bay and explore baroque churches and Neolithic temples older than the Pyramids.
Where to Stay:Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz is a family-friendly resort built from local limestone. It features al fresco dining, three outdoor pools surrounded by palm trees and one of Europe’s largest Ayurvedic spas.
